CLEARIELD – The Clearfield Borough Police Department is grateful for a local benefactor.

At Thursday’s Clearfield Borough Council work session, Police Chief Vince McGinnis thanked local resident, Don Shaw, for a recent donation of $5,000. McGinnis said the money will be put toward the cost of an in-car computer system.

McGinnis said the department is grateful that Shaw took the time to make the contribution and is hoping to get the rest of the funds needed for the computer stem, but Shaw’s donation will be a “big help.”

The council then discussed a letter regarding safety concerns on West First Avenue.

Mayor James Schell said the speed limit within the borough is only 25 miles-per-hour. With school out for summer, Schell said the number of children outside playing makes that speed limit enforcement particularly important.

McGinnis added that he discussed the issues in the letter with his officers. He said the officers told him that they issue a lot of tickets and have a lot of problems during the baseball games in the area. He said the officers told him many of the individuals receiving the tickets get belligerent with the officers.

Council member James Kling said there have been issues with people “jumping the curb” in order to park their vehicles in the grass.

The public safety committee asked the council to go to the area to see the issues for themselves in preparation for further discussion at next week’s regular council meeting.

Also at the meeting, Code Enforcement Officer Larry Mack wanted to remind the public that while the state has changed the regulations on fireworks, the borough still has an ordinance in place which prohibits certain types of fireworks.

Mack said there were numerous issues within the borough where residents were setting off prohibited fireworks the week prior to the Fourth of July as well as the week after.

Mack said in the future, residents will not be given a warning for prohibited fireworks, and they will be cited and fined on the spot.
