Chiefs Handcuffed in Frederick Tourney Semifinal Loss

FREDERICK, Md. — Anthony DiMartino cooled off the Clearfield American Legion baseball team’s bats in a 5-0 shutout that sent Brooklawn (N.J.) Post 72 to the finals of the Frederick Wood Bat Tournament Monday.

In the title game that began with the temperature approaching 100 degrees at McCurdy Field, Delaware nipped the Brookers 6-5 in eight innings. The champions had defeated Cecil County (Md.) 10-5 in the other semifinal.

Clearfield (9-6) went into its morning start against Brooklawn with a lofty .351 batting average, but DiMartino dominated.

Though not overpowering, the lefthander completely stymied the John Lewis Shade Post 6 Chiefs with very good ball movement.

He was two outs away from a no-hitter when Eli Glass flared a single behind third base in the top of the seventh inning.

DiMartino then punctuated his gem with his sixth and seven strikeouts.

Aided by a pair of double plays, DiMartino faced only 23 batters, two over the minimum. He walked two and hit one.

Glass, making his first start in 11 days, gave up eight hits in a complete-game effort.

He allowed only two hits through four innings but trailed 3-0 because of two unearned runs.

The Brookers got to him for three hits in their last two-at bats though scoring just single runs in each inning.

They were led by Ryan Coyle with two singles and two RBIs and Zach Morales with two hits, one a double, and three runs scored.

The Chiefs will return to action Thursday at Curwensville for the first of seven Jefferson County League games in six days on their revised schedule.
