Volunteers decorated Cold Stream Dam, Philipsburg Memorial Park, Peeble’s Plaza and more last week as part of “Paint the Town Purple.”
Nearly a dozen businesses in the community are following suit to show their support for Relay For Life of the Moshannon Valley, which will be wrapping up its fundraising efforts Saturday, June 23, at a day-long event hosted by Geisinger Medical Center.
“The community’s support means so much to us,” said Tim Nebgen, chair of the event leadership team. “Without it, none of what we do is possible.”
Residents are reminded that they don’t have to be a business owner to participate in Paint the Town Purple.
Cancer has touched everyone in some form, so everyone is welcome to show their support by putting up purple decorations and attending the event.
The theme for this year’s event is “Walk of Fame.” Each team selected a celebrity who battled cancer and will decorate their tent site in their honor or memory.
Celebrities selected include John Wayne, Walt Disney, Shirley Temple and Olivia Newton John and Roger Moore.
Walkers take the track at 8 a.m. and the opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. Registration for the Kids Coin Lap begins at 1 p.m., with the lap scheduled for 1:30 p.m. A frozen T-shirt contest and balloon toss will follow the lap.
There will be two seatings for the Survivor Dinner, the first being at 3:30 p.m. and the second at 4:30 p.m. A speaker will address all survivors at 5:30 p.m., with the survivor lap following at 6 p.m.
Luminaria services begin at 9 p.m. and will be followed by closing ceremonies will follow at 11 p.m.
Entertainment to appear throughout the day includes a demonstration by DJ Studios Karate, the Daisies Twirling Unit, Front & Centre Productions, and DJ Gary Weyandt. A full schedule will be posted to the Relay For Life of the Moshannon Valley Facebook page.
Those planning to attend are reminded Relay For Life is a smoke-free event. Pets are also prohibited.
So far, the 11 registered teams have raised more than $20,000 for the American Cancer Society.
