CLEARFIELD – Recently, students of the masonry program at the Clearfield County Career & Technology Center performed restoration work on the front steps of the Clearfield Chamber of Commerce in downtown Clearfield.
The project consisted of removing old mortar and caulking joints on the stone steps with a grinder, repointing the joints with new mortar and caulking and washing down the steps.
“This was a great project for the students to get out of the classroom to experience because in the masonry shop at the CCCTC we mainly focus on new construction,” according to Troy Danver, instructor.
“This allowed for the students to see another side of the trade, restoration work. The project showed them the basic concepts of being able to replace old mortar joints that have weathered over time, and adding new mortar to make the historical buildings last for many more years.”
The students involved were Paul Kennedy (Clearfield), Tanner Rogers (Clearfield), Logan Rogers (Clearfield), Coty Stephens (Clearfield), Dalton Manahan (Clearfield) and Josh Bumbarger (Moshannon Valley).
