CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Commissioners issued three proclamations at their work session meeting on Tuesday.
First, the commissioners proclaimed May as Older Americans Month at the request of Terry Khoury and Joan Bracco of the county’s Area Agency on Aging.
Older Americans comprise of about 65 percent of Pennsylvania’s population. “… This has become our population,” Khoury said, adding that, “this is a very important time for us.”
Khoury also provided the commissioners with a profile and statistical information on older Americans to peruse at their leisure.
Second, the commissioners proclaimed May as Community Action Month at the request of Susan Hawthorne, Central Pennsylvania Community Action executive director.
Hawthorne said that every month is Community Action Month for her agency and its staff members who take pride and have passion for the services they provide in local communities.
“We care about the people in our communities,” she said. “We help people take care of themselves and each other. It’s a privilege to serve Clearfield County.”
Commissioner Tony Scotto thanked Hawthorne for CPCA’s dedication and hard work while also saying he didn’t believe people realized the shape others were in.
“Community Action, as an agency, really gets involved with people’s lives in all areas of the county and all ages from young to old,” added Commissioner Mark B. McCracken.
Third, the commissioners proclaimed May 6 as Firewise Community Day in Treasure Lake at the request of the Northpoint Fire Co. and the Treasure Lake Property Owners Association.
Commissioner John A. Sobel, chair, explained that Treasure Lake has taken steps to become designated as a “Firewise” community.
The national program emphasizes community involvement and provides important information for residents to reduce the risk of wildland fire igniting homes.
According to Sobel, Treasure Lake is Pennsylvania’s largest Firewise community west of the Susquehanna River. The TLPOA is hosting a celebration event May 6, which is open to the public.
Sobel said the event will feature tours of emergency vehicles, a visit from Smokey Bear, free smoke detectors and educational information, etc.
Additionally, Treasure Lake Security will be on-hand, along with representatives from Clearfield County’s Emergency Services and Sheriff’s Departments.
In other business, the commissioners approved liquid fuel allocations for Newburg Borough and Brady Township in the amount of $3,000 and $5,643.14, respectively.
