MEN’S GOLF

GROVE CITY — Thiel senior Jason Thorp (Curwensville) earned his second tournament title of the spring by shooting a three-over-par 75 in Grove City College’s McBride-Behringer-Allen Invitational at the Grove City Country Club last Tuesday.

The Tomcats placed sixth in the 10-team field with a 339 aggregate score.

They hosted seven teams Saturday in the Thiel Spring Invitational at the Greens of Greenville, lowering their total to 328 which still was only sixth best.

Thorp recorded his highest score, 80, of the Tomcats’ four spring outings to tie for 10th place.

Colton McCright was Thiel’s medalist with a 79, which tied for eighth, marking the first time in 10 fall and spring tourneys that Thorp didn‘t turn in the team’s low score.

MONT ALTO — Freshman center fielder Thayne Morgan (Clearfield) pinch-hit in the top of the ninth inning and singled home the winning run as Penn State DuBois nipped Penn State Mont Alto 7-6 in the nightcap of their Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.

He pinch-ran and scored a run in the opener, a 16-3 victory for the Lions.

The two teams met at Showers Field in DuBois Friday, and Morgan went to the plate twice in a 16-3 romp, driving in a run with a single and later crossing the plate.

The Lions, who are 20-7, split two home games earlier in the week, defeating Central Penn 5-0 and losing to Westminster 6-3.

Sophomore pitcher Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) made his fifth appearance against Westminster but faced only three batters, retiring one and allowing two singles.

He has a 2-0 record and a 3.45 earned run average for 15.2 innings, with three starts and one complete game. He has registered 10 strikeouts with four walks and four hit batsmen.

Morgan has played in 20 games, 10 as a starter, with 12 hits for a .308 average. He has driven in four runs and scored 12.

Sweeping Penn State Mont Alto padded Penn State DuBois’ PSUAC record to 10-1, which leads the West Division by two games.
