CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Salvation Army offers a free, three-day after-school program.

Area children and teens fill its building Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays immediately following school.  They are cared for by the staff and volunteers, all of whom have the proper training and clearances.

Children and teens receive help on their homework; participate in games and activities; and are provided a hot, healthy dinner.

On Tuesday nights, they are engaged in music, dance and art enrichment activities.  Tweens and teens are given character-building lessons, games and activities Wednesday nights.

And, on Thursdays all ages take part in troop programs, during which they strive to earn badges relating to various skill and topic areas.

If necessary, transportation is provided to any child in the after-school program.

“This program has become a vital part of the community,” says Captain Helen Johnson.

“It provides a safe place for kids to come when parents are working late; it helps feed them three nights each week; and enriches their lives with skills and training in arts.”

However, the Salvation Army is currently in “dire need” of volunteers to help teach the children, assist with activities, prepare meals and cleanup.

All volunteers must complete clearance paperwork and be willing to participate in a few brief trainings.  Volunteers can either make a regular commitment or be placed on a “back-up list.”

The Salvation Army is also gearing up for its “Summer Lunch and Literacy” program that provides lunches to children in housing developments and at the park on weekdays.

“We are in need of volunteers to help with that, as well,” says Johnson. To volunteer, please call 814-765-4981 or visit the Salvation Army between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday – Friday.
