Clearfield Elks Give $4,500 for Playground Equipment in Rebecca Park

CLEARFIELD – The community continues to step up to help improve a local park.

At Thursday’s Clearfield Borough Council meeting, Tom Evans, exalted ruler of Clearfield Elks Lodge No. 540, told council members that the Elks have received a grant in the amount of $4,500 from the Elks National Foundation.

Evans said the Elks have chosen to use that grant to purchase new playground equipment for Rebecca Park. He said the Elks cannot install the equipment at the park and are asking for the borough’s help.

Evans said the purchase price of the equipment and the shipping fees will be covered by the Elks, but the borough will need to put the equipment in the park.

Evans said the Elks are looking to purchase two new “spring toys” for children to ride on, a new set of swings and a “monkey bar” set.

He said the new equipment will be used to replace the existing equipment and the deadline for installation is the end of July.

Borough Operations Manager Leslie Stott said the new equipment should have no impact on the ongoing plans a local college student has to build a community garden in Rebecca Park.

She said she is hoping the community garden and this new donation from the Elks will help encourage other organizations and members of the community to help improve Rebecca Park.

Also at the meeting, Police Chief Vincent McGinnis reminded residents that vehicles cannot be parked on borough roads for more than 48 hours.

He asked residents to move their vehicles, as there are a lot of vehicles presently parked on the streets with tickets, which still haven’t been moved.

In other business, the council voted to approve:

  • Restricting traffic around the fairgrounds on June 2 for the annual Relay for Life.
  • Closing East Locust Street from Second Street to Healy Avenue April 21 for the YMCA Healthy Kids Event.
  • Purchasing four tires for the fire truck in the amount of approximately $1,624.
  • Authorizing the police department to carry NARCAN.
  • Directing the planning committee review the snow emergency ordinance.
  • Allowing the police chief to hire a temporary part-time secretary.
  • Accepting the resignation of Kathy Miller from the Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library Board of Trustees.
  • Appointing Michael Bookhamer to serve on the Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library Board of Trustees.
  • Advertising for all vacancies on borough boards
  • The personnel contract for the police chief.
