SPRING MILLS — Once-beaten Penns Valley clamped down on defense after the first quarter and defeated the visiting Clearfield Lady Bison 53-30 in Mountain League girls basketball action Friday night.
Sophomore guard Hannah Montminy, much-improved as are the Lady Rams according to Lady Bison coach Joey Castagnolo, sparked her team’s sixth consecutive league win with 23 points.
“They’re a lot better than last year and they played tough man defense,” Castagnolo said.
Penns Valley (9-1) held Clearfield to just 18 points after the first period, with ended with the hosts in front 15-12.
The Lady Rams were comfortably ahead, 32-16, at halftime.
Nikki Brossard’s 10 points were high for the Lady Bison, who reached the halfway mark of the season at 4-7 with a 2-3 league record.
Clearfield will begin a stretch of four games in five days with a trip to St. Marys Tuesday for a non-league test against one of their District 9 opponents.
Penns Valley’s junior varsity also was victorious, 41-17. Kylie Vantassel had six points for Clearfield.
