PUNXSUTAWNEY – In conjunction with National Child Passenger Safety Week, the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop C, are continuing their efforts to reduce the number of improperly installed child safety seats.

State police will offer free safety seat checks to the public. Troopers will help locate defective seats as well as child seats affected by manufacturer recalls. It also provides an opportunity to take questions about the child passenger seat law.

Pennsylvania law requires the following of motorists who are transporting a child in a motor vehicle:

  • Children from birth to 2 years are to be secured in an approved rear-facing child passenger safety seat.
  • Children from 2 to 4 years are to be secured in an approved forward-facing child passenger safety seat.
  • Children 4 to 8 years are to be secured in an approved booster seat.
  • Any persons between 8 and 18 years – in any seating location in the vehicle – are to be fastened with a seatbelt.

State police will conduct child passenger safety seat checks at the following locations:

  • Punxsutawney PSP (Jefferson County): Central Fire Department, Punxsutawney, Sept. 23, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., 814-938-0510
  • Clearfield PSP (Clearfield County): Clearfield Fire Department, Clearfield, Sept. 19, 2 p.m. – 8 p.m., 814-857-3800
  • DuBois PSP (Clearfield County): DuSan Ambulance, DuBois, Sept. 20, 2 p.m. – 8 p.m., 814-371-4652
  • Ridgway PSP (Elk County): PennDOT Maintenance Office, Ridgway, 3 p.m. – 9 p.m., Sept. 18, 814-776-6136

Troopers will examine all child restraint seats for proper installation, and parents will receive instructions on how to correct any deficiencies.
