PennDOT to Open New Bridge in Pike Township Tomorrow

Detour will be lifted but alternating pattern will be in place at the bridge

PIKE TOWNSHIP – Tomorrow, Sept. 1, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will open a new bridge on Nicholson Road (Route 3032) in Pike Township, Clearfield County.

The bridge spans Hartshorn Run, about two miles north of Curwensville. No exact time has been set for the re-opening, but PennDOT expects that to occur by late afternoon. Replacing the old bridge will remove it from Clearfield County’s structurally deficient list.

The detour that has been in place since July 5 will be lifted once the bridge is open to traffic. That detour made use of Routes 3015, 879, 1001, and 2014.

Once the new bridge is open to traffic, an alternating traffic pattern will be in place at the bridge. The alternating pattern will be enforced by self-regulating stop signs.

The alternating pattern is necessary until crews can perform guiderail installation and final paving. PennDOT expects that work to take place later this fall. PennDOT will close the bridge temporarily for one or two days when the guiderail and paving work takes place.

Crews from PennDOT Clearfield County Maintenance have been working since July 5 to replace the old bridge with a new GRS-IBS (Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Integrated Bridge System) bridge.

The GRS approach is new technology that offers a method of bridge support that blends the roadway into the bridge superstructure, saving time and money.

PennDOT thanks area motorists for their patience during this replacement project.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 825 traffic cameras.

511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA Web site.

For PennDOT regional information on Twitter, follow www.twitter.com/511PAStateCOLL.
