The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will begin roadway improvement work next week in Centre County, focusing on Route 550.

This work is part of a group contract to improve more than 38 miles of roadway in Centre, Clinton, Clearfield, Mifflin and Juniata counties.

This project will improve roadway ride quality on nine routes in the five counties and extend the life of the roadway surface.

The week of June 26 will feature the following:

  • Daytime paint line removal and micro-surfacing (thin overlay) on Route 550 from Route 3017 to Carson’s Corners.
  • Daytime paint line removal and micro-surfacing (thin overlay) on Route 144 from Bellefonte to Milesburg.
  • Daytime paint line removal and micro-surfacing (thin overlay) on Route 1005 (Forest Avenue) from Route 550 to the Hanson Quarry.

Each work zone will feature an alternating traffic pattern controlled by flaggers in the roadway. Short travel delays should be expected and drivers should be alert for slow moving and stopped vehicles through the work zone. All work is weather and schedule dependent.

Asphalt Paving Systems Inc. of Hammonton, NJ is the contractor on this $2.1 million project, which is expected to finish by late September. PennDOT will issue updates on this work as work locations change.

PennDOT reminds drivers to be cautious in work zones, obey posted speed limits and always buckle up.

For more information on projects occurring or being bid this year, those made possible by or accelerated by the state transportation funding plan (Act 89), or those on the department’s Four and Twelve Year Plans, visit www.projects.penndot.gov.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 825 traffic cameras.

511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA Web site.
