SOFTBALL
CLARION — Junior pitcher Rachel Hoffman (Clearfield) spun a four-hitter with five strikeouts and two walks against Pitt-Johnstown to salvage a split for Clarion with a 2-0 victory at Memorial Field Sunday afternoon.
The win was the first in eight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games for the Golden Eagles (4-28).
Hoffman, who transferred from UPJ after her freshman season, owns all of Clarion’s wins, including two shutouts and a combined shutout.
Sunday’s gem lowered her earned run average to a season-low 3.88 for 15 appearances.
She has completed seven of her 14 starts, working 83 innings with 63 strikeouts and 36 walks.
Hoffman was the losing pitcher in second-game road setbacks against Indiana University of Pennsylvania (5-0) last Wednesday and Mansfield (5-2) Saturday.
She was the designated hitter in the openers of the three PSAC twinbills and had a double and three singles in 12 at-bats.
Hoffman has 10 hits, including two doubles and a home run, for a .192 batting average. She has driven in three runs.

BASEBALL
DUBOIS — Sophomore catcher/third baseman Josh Sorbera (Clearfield) singled and walked in his first start behind the plate as Penn State DuBois defeated Penn State Greater Allegheny 4-2 in the second game of a doubleheader at Showers Field Sunday.
The Lions also won the opener 3-1 and lead the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference West Division at 7-1, two games ahead of Penn State Beaver.
Freshman Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) pitched two-thirds of an inning in the Lions’ 8-5 non-conference win over visiting Alfred (N.Y.) State last Wednesday.
The right-hander has worked 9-2/3 innings in five appearances with three strikeouts and one walk. He has allowed 12 runs, nine earned for an 8.38 ERA.
Sorbera has four hits in six games for a .400 batting average. He has driven in three runs.
Penn State DuBois is 11-6 with a six-game winning streak.

ALTOONA — Junior pitcher Kurtis Krise (Clearfield) experienced his roughest outing of the season in Penn State Altoona’s 13-5 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference loss to Mount Aloysius last Tuesday, giving up five hits and five runs, all earned, in two innings.
Krise, who had allowed a total of five earned runs in his previous six appearances, struck out three and walked one. His earned run average almost doubled to 5.09.
The Lions (12-14) won the nightcap 12-4 and then swept a road doubleheader from D’Youville (N.Y.) 10-3 and 14-0 Sunday to balance their AMCC record at 4-4.
Krise has pitched 17-2/3 innings with 10 strikeouts, seven walks and two hit batsmen.

INDIANA — Senior Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) of Clarion sprinted 100 meters in a season-best 12.53 seconds to finish sixth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Challenge in George P. Miller Stadium on the Indiana University of Pennsylvania campus Saturday.

FAIRFAX, Va. — St. Francis (Pa.) sophomore Sarah Lash (Clearfield) placed 19th in the javelin with throw of 33.69 meters (110 feet, 6½ inches) at the Mason Strong Invitational hosted by George Mason University Saturday.

MEN’S GOLF
APOLLO — Junior Jason Thorp (Curwensville) of Thiel finished in a tie for 28th place at the two-day Carnegie Mellon University Spring Shootout on The Links of Spring Church course.
A five-over-par 75 had him in a four-tie for second place going into Sunday morning‘s round, but he carded an 83 to place in the middle of the 47 player from nine teams.
The Tomcats wound up seventh with a 646 (325-321) total.
