2014 French Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka overcame a second-set blip against Viktor Troicki to book his place in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.
The Swiss No. 2 edged a tight first set on a tie break, but his Serbian opponent bounced straight back to win a tie break set of his own.
Wawrinka eventually prevailed 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, securing the final two sets with relative ease.
The third seed will now play world No. 55 Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who shocked the big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic with a straight-sets win.
“It’s a great victory for me,” Wawinka told ATP World Tour. “I was trying to just stay calm with myself, find my game all over the match.
“I managed to play better, I managed to find solutions.”
Meanwhile, Andy Murray overcame his second Goliath opponent in two days after beating 6 ft 10 inch American John Isner to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the previous round, the world No. 2 had to overcome 6 ft 11 inch Ivo Karlovic, but dismissed both opponents in three sets.
Murray looked in danger of losing the first set but eventually won a mammoth tie break 11-9, before securing the final two sets 6-4, 6-3.
“It was a very important tie-break to win,” Murray told reporters after the game. “I got lucky on his first set point when I guessed right on a short forehand.”
Murray will play Richard Gasquet in the quarterfinals after the ninth seed — the only remaining Frenchman in the draw — beat world No. 6 Kei Nishikori.
Buoyed by a partisan home crown, Gasquet prevailed in four sets, winning 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to reach his first ever French Open last eight.
“The public put all the pressure on Kei today,” an emotional Gasquet told reporters courtside. “I didn’t really start well in the match, but it’s very hard for Nishikori to play against the crowd — thank you for supporting me.”
“This is the biggest court in the world for a French player.”
