At least one New York tabloid isn’t impressed with Donald Trump’s latest high-profile endorsement.
The day after the GOP front-runner received the backing of Chris Christie, the New York Daily News tore into the New Jersey governor, saying he’s a “MAN WITH A KLAN” — a reference to former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke’s support of Trump.
Earlier in the week, Duke praised Trump, saying, “Voting against Donald Trump at this point is really treason to your heritage,” the Daily News reported, running a front page featuring a hooded Klansman with the headline “TRUMP FOR PREZ.”
Trump said during a press conference on Friday morning that he disavowed Duke’s support.
Later on Friday, Trump had a strange encounter with a protester who revealed he was wearing a shirt that said “KKK endorses Trump” before he was escorted out of a campaign rally in Oklahoma City.
The Daily News has skewered Trump repeatedly over the course of his campaign. In February alone, Trump-focused covers featured headlines such as “DEAD CLOWN WALKING” after Trump lost to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in Iowa; “CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES” after Trump won the Republican South Carolina primary; and “ANTICHRIST!” after the Pope said Trump’s plan to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border was “not Christian.”
Meanwhile, the New York Post — whose editorial board is more sympathetic to Trump’s conservative positions than the Daily News — trumpeted Christie’s endorsement Saturday with a front page that said “YUUUGE!”
Christie endorsed Trump on Friday at a rally in Fort Worth, Texas, where he said the brash real-estate magnate would be the Republican Party’s best bet to beat Hillary Clinton were she to become the Democratic nominee.
