Kesha says legal battle with producer is ‘bigger than just about me’

Kesha said her legal fight with her producer is about “being free” from a man she has accused of abusing her and not about renegotiating her contract.

“All I ever wanted was to be able to make music without being afraid, scared, or abused,” Kesha posted to her Facebook page on Wednesday. “This case has never been about a renegotiation of my record contract — it was never about getting a bigger, or a better deal. This is about being free from my abuser.”

Kesha has accused her producer Dr. Luke, whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald, of emotional and sexual abuse.

The pop artist added that she “would be willing to work with Sony if they do the right thing and break all ties that bind me to my abuser.”

Wednesday’s statement came a week after Kesha, whose real name is Kesha Rose Sebert, was denied permission to record music outside of her Sony contract with Dr. Luke.

Sony could not be immediately reached for comment.

Gottwald has denied Kesha’s allegations saying on Twitter Monday that he “didn’t rape Kesha” and has “never had sex with her.”

“It’s sad that she would turn a contract negotiation into something so horrendous and untrue,” Gottwald tweeted Monday.

Kesha said on Facebook that the issues surrounding her legal fight is “bigger than just about me.”

“I think about young girls today — I don’t want my future daughter — or your daughter — or any person to be afraid that they will be punished if they speak out about being abused, especially if their abuser is in a position of power,” she wrote.

“Unfortunately I don’t think that my case is giving people who have been abused confidence that they can speak out, and that’s a problem,” she wrote.

The pop star thanked her supporters on Wednesday saying that she was “so, so beyond humbled and thankful for all of the support I’ve received from everyone.”

“Words cannot really express the emotions I’ve gone through reading and seeing how amazing everyone has been to me… Other entertainers who knowingly put their own careers at stake by supporting me, I will be forever grateful,” she wrote.

Lady Gaga and Kelly Clarkson, publicly expressed their support for Kesha on social media.

Taylor Swift donated $250,000 to Kesha to “help with any of her financial needs during this trying time,” according to a statement from a representative for Swift.

Kesha urged victims of abuse to not be afraid to speak out.

“There are places that will make you feel safe. There are people who will help you. I for one, will stand beside you and behind you,” she wrote.
