CURWENSVILLE – Struggling with offense in the middle two quarters the Curwensville boys basketball squad dropped at 62-48 game to DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) Monday night at Curwensville Area High School.
The loss for the Golden Tide has them at 0-8 on the year, while the win for the Cardinals improved their record to 6-4.
DCC jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Tide senior Jake Terry hit a bucket with 4:58 left in the opening quarter.
R. J. Olsen and Terry then scored back to back field goals for the Tide, which knotted the game at 6-6 at the 3:56 point of the first eight minutes.
The Cardinals then went on a 10-0 run to dart in front 16-6.
Thanks to seven first quarter points by Terry, the Golden Tide cut the DCC margin to just 16-11 after one quarter.
Then came one of those middle quarters with Curwensville being outscored 15-8 to trail at the break 31-19.
Justin Miknis, a Cardinal freshman, did the damage in the second quarter, scoring nine of his game high 23.
Miknis also connected on four three-pointers, as did Terry for Curwensville.
The third quarter was basically a duplicate of the second, with DuBois Central Catholic again outscoring the Golden Tide 15-7 to take a commanding 20 point margin into the final frame, 46-26.
Afterwards, Curwensville head coach Shane Pentz spoke about the third quarter, saying, “For whatever reason there was a three minute period in the third quarter where we just stopped playing defense. And once again turnovers really hurt us.”
A bright spot for the Tide was junior Zach Marshall who scored 10 straight points for Curwensville with five at the end of the third and the other five at the start of the fourth quarter. On the night Marshall had 12 points.
Outscoring the Cardinals 22-16 over the final eight minutes, Curwensville did cut DCC’s lead in half, 52-42 and 54-44 in the final two minutes of action before the visitors pulled away to win by 14.
Pentz also said, “We did play better overall tonight, but as I said earlier we had a few minutes of lapse on defense. And not getting to the foul line didn’t help much either.”
On the night the Cardinals were 19 of 31 from the free throw line while the Golden Tide only took four, making two.
Terry led the Tide offense with 16 tallies while LaParne helped out teammate Miknis with 21.
In junior varsity action Curwensville was victorious 65-32 over the Cardinals.
The Golden Tide had a good night from beyond the arc, making eight three-pointers.
Curwensville is on the road Wednesday, traveling to Johnsonburg to play the Rams.
