Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders drew more than 19,000 people to an NBA arena on Sunday night, August 9, 2015, in Portland, Oregon, setting the record for the largest political event of the 2016 presidential contest.

Bernie Sanders won the readers’ poll for TIME’s Person of the Year, besting human rights activist Malala Yousafzai and Pope Francis and far outpacing other White House candidates.

TIME announced Monday that Sanders won a little more than 10% of the readers’ votes in an online poll, almost double the 5.2% that Yousafzali won and well ahead of Pope Francis’ 3.7%.

President Barack Obama was the choice of 3.5% of readers and other White House candidates came in with much less support — 1.8% picked Donald Trump and 1.4% picked Hillary Clinton.

TIME’s editors will select the Person of the Year — the person they determine had the greatest impact on the news this year — and announce the selection Wednesday on NBC’s “Today.”
