U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is touring the Middle East on an extraordinarily difficult mission to calm tensions that have spread beyond organized groups to apparently spontaneous civilian-on-civilian attacks.

A meeting between Secretary of State John Kerry and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was underway Saturday morning at Abbas’ home.

As Kerry arrived, Abbas came out of his home to greet him. The two men shook hands and started walking in.

Kerry turned briefly to answer a question about expectations for the meeting, saying he would speak afterward.

Inside, according to a pool report, Abbas was asked if he had high expectations for the meeting, and he responded that he has hope.

Kerry is scheduled next to travel to Jordan to continue his talks on bringing stability to the region.
