Mifflin County was created in 1789 from parts of Cumberland County and Northumberland County and named after Thomas Mifflin, the first Governor of Pennsylvania. Lewistown, the county seat, features five buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Embassy Theatre, a vaudeville theatre from the 1920’s that is currently being restored.
