Chelsea Clinton said Tuesday that her upbringing gave her a thick skin — and now that she has a daughter, she’s backing her mother’s White House bid more than ever.
“I don’t remember a time when people weren’t attacking my parents,” Clinton said on CBS’s “This Morning.” “So in some ways I think as I grew up, I developed a thick skin. And I also know my mom and I think it’s so much more important to look at — kind of what people do and how they lead their lives than what’s happening in the echo chamber.”
Clinton said she hopes to teach her daughter, Charlotte, the importance of looking at how people lead. She also considered her experience with motherhood as the main reason for supporting her mother’s presidency.
“I actually think I’m even more biased now as a mom than as a daughter, because I feel like I have a different stake in the future,” she told hosts Norah O’Donnell, Gayle King and Charlie Rose.
Clinton, who appeared on the show to promote her new book, “It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired and Get Going!” praised her parents for being supportive of her desire to be informed.
“The first thing I remember learning how to read was the newspaper,” she said. “I loved reading the newspaper because it gave me access to what was happening in the world.”
Clinton was also asked about her thoughts on Vice President Joe Biden jumping into the presidential race. Clinton took the same stance as her mother, responding that it’s “very much up to the vice president to make what he thinks is the right choice for himself, his family and for our country.”
But when asked whether her friendship with Ivanka Trump was impacted by the politics between their parents’ presidential races, Chelsea said simply, “We don’t talk about that.”
