James Carl Hatten, 93, of Grampian died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015 at his residence after a lengthy illness.

Born Sept. 11, 1921 in Chestnut Grove, he was the son of Robert and Rhoda (Pierce) Hatten.

Mr. Hatten had first worked for Clarence Thomas Coal Mining Company as a heavy equipment operator.

He was then the co-owner of K&H Coal Company. And, finally up until his retirement, he owned the Hatten Mining Company.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, where he served in the Asiatic/Pacific Theatre. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart.

He was also a member of the St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church in Grampian.

On Jan. 11, 1941, he wed the former Martha Winifred Danvir, who preceded him in death on April 8, 1995.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Deloris Hatten; a grandson, James “Jim” Hatten; and 10 brothers and sisters, Ida, Clyde, Andrew, Betty, Lester, Jessie, Arvella, Bertha, Beulah and Margaret.  He was the last member of his generation.

Surviving are six children, Norman E. Hatten Sr. and his wife, Sandy, JoAnne Nelen and Judy McCombs and her husband, Edward, all of Irishtown; James “Terry” Hatten and his wife, Tammy of Curwensville; Patricia Litz and her husband, Mounty of Spring Mills; and Karen Hatten of Clearfield.  Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel of the St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Grampian with the Rev. Father Mark J. Mastrian officiating. Burial will follow in the cemetery.

Friends will be received Friday at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. of Curwensville from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. when the procession will depart for the cemetery.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by members of the Clearfield Honor Guard.

The family suggests contributions be made to either the Clearfield County SPCA, 275 21st St., Clearfield, PA 16830 or any veterans help group or veterans organization.

Online condolences may be made to the family at www.chidboyfuneralhome.com.

The Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. of Curwensville is in charge of the arrangements.
