CLEARFIELD — Seven teams, including the two-time defending champion Bedford Over-the-Hillbillies, will contend for the 21st annual Clearfield “Past-Your-Prime” Modified Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament at the Bucky Strunk Memorial Field this weekend.
Action in the wood bat tourney for players 40-and-older will get under way Saturday at 9 a.m. with Buster’s Sports Bar Downriver squaring off against Siegel Engraving/Buster’s Sports Bar.
In the other opening round games, Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub will tangle with the Meatheads at 10:15 and Potter’s Bricklayers of Philipsburg will go against Bob Boob Garage at 11:30.
The Hillbillies, who also reigned in 2011, drew the bye and will play the first game winner at 12:45 p.m. in a winner’s bracket semifinal, with the Game 2 and Game 3 winners taking to the field at 2:00.
Three elimination bracket games will set the stage for Sunday’s schedule that begins with the winner’s bracket final at 9:30 a.m.
Two elimination bracket games will determine the other pairing for the championship game at 1:15 p.m. If an extra game is necessary, it will start at 2:30.
In a speed-up rule, players go to bat with a 1-1 count.
Potter’s owns the most championship trophies, seven, the last one in 2007.
The Meatheads are next with four, followed by the Hillbillies, Denny’s with two and Buster’s Sports Bar, Legend’s Sports Bar & Grill and Aqua Specialist of Mechanicsburg with one apiece. Denny’s and Aqua Specialist shared the title in 2008.
Proceeds from the entry fees, concession stand and two fund-raisers go to area youth with the main beneficiary being the Clearfield-based William L. Dixon Detachment of the U.S. Marine Corps for its annual “Toys for Tots” project.
Individuals or businesses interested in making donations for the concession stand or fund-raisers are asked to call committee chairman Jerry Bickel as soon as possible at 590-1399.
