CLEARFIELD – A Philadelphia woman accused of sneaking marijuana into a state prison has pleaded guilty in Clearfield County Court.
Maria I. Rivera, 33, 117 E. Lippincott St., Philadelphia, pleaded guilty to controlled substance/contraband to confined person.
She was sentenced to six months to one year in jail and two years consecutive probation. She was fined $500 plus costs.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, in June of 2013, a security officer put out an advisory regarding inmate San Martinez of the State Correctional Institute at Houtzdale. There was a possibility Rivera was brining contraband into the facility for Martinez.
That day Rivera arrived to visit with Martinez. She was seen reaching into her right pants pocket and transferring something into a small bag of cookies. Martinez then was seen reaching into the cookie bag and removing the unknown object, which he put in his mouth. He was having difficulty swallowing when he was restrained and placed in a dry cell.
The next day after he defecated, officers recovered five dime-sized bags of marijuana. The substance weighed three grams.
When Martinez was questioned, he admitted to ingesting the five balloons of marijuana. Rivera was also questioned and admitted she had taken the marijuana into the jail and passed it to Martinez.
