STATE COLLEGE – The Centre County Historical Society would like to invite the public to attend its 19th annual Plant Celebration and Sale from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. May 10 at the Centre Furnace Mansion. Admission is free; however, donations are welcome.
This year, the CCHS partnered with the Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania to offer a free children’s flower pot decorating activity for Mother’s Day. Additionally, an exhibition, “Rural Landscapes: Exploring rural heritage through the art of the Farmland Preservation Artists of Central Pennsylvania” will be open for visitors.
As is tradition, the Plant Celebration features native and non-native plants from local and regional growers and from the Centre Furnace Mansion gardens. The 2014 ‘Victorian Plant of the Year’ is Solomon’s Seal, Polygonatum Odoratum.
Locally grown heirloom bulbs, herbs, annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs will be available for sale. Other garden vendors and artisans will participate in the celebration, a complete vendor list is available online: www.centrehistory.org.
Plant Celebration activities, provided in partnership with the Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania and the Penn State Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners of Centre County, include:
9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
- Plant Sale: Plants and garden-related items for sale, as well as baked goods.
- Open House: Centre Furnace Mansion, gardens and grounds will open for visitors to explore.
- Art Exhibition: There will be an art exhibition, “Rural Landscapes,” with Farmland Preservation Artists.
- Ask a Master Gardener: Penn State Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners of Centre County will answer questions and identify/evaluate plant samples.
9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
- “Paint a Pot, Plant a Pot:” It is a plant activity for making Mother’s Day gifts, for children ages 2-12 years. Supplies will be provided for free while they last.
1 p.m.
- Garden Talk: “Happenin’ Hydrangeas” will be presented by Shari Edelson, director of Horticulture and Curator for the Arboretum at Penn State.
Proceeds from the plant sale benefit the Centre County Historical Society; proceeds from the art exhibition and art sale will benefit the Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania.
