DUBOIS – Jim Reitz and Ed Reich of the DuBois Area Soap Box Derby Association approached the DuBois City Council this week about the sixth annual soap box derby race.

Reitz asked the council to use the 600 block of West Long Avenue. He also requested for funds to be budgeted to repave the section of West Long Avenue between Evergreen Street and Bell Lane.

He stated concerns with the safety of the 7- to 17-year-old drivers, some of whom would approach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour.  He indicated that over the last five years, the DASBDA has spent $3,000 of its own funds, in addition to donated materials, to patch the roadway.

Reitz said they have considered other locations within the city. However, he said they haven’t found an alternative location. As a result, the council decided to consider his request.
