LHU to Offer Evening Courses in Multiple Healthcare Fields

LOCK HAVEN — Working adults who want challenging and rewarding careers in the healthcare or pharmaceutical fields have the opportunity to jumpstart their professional endeavors at Lock Haven University’s Main and Clearfield campuses through course offerings this spring.

Beginning March 25, both campuses are offering the Clinical Medical Assistant program. Lock Haven is offering a Pharmacy Technician program, and the Clearfield campus is offering the Medical Billing and Coding and EKG Technician programs. All courses are held in the evenings from March through June. Once complete, students will be eligible for national certification exams in each of the fields of study. The deadline to register for the courses is March 1.  

? Clinical Medical Assistant (Lock Haven and Clearfield) instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle. Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, a professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare.

? In the Pharmacy Technician (Lock Haven only) program, students receive a rich education in this comprehensive 50-hour program which will prepare students to work as pharmacy technicians in a retail store or other pharmacy setting. Students will also be prepared to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Students will learn dosage calculations, drug classifications, the top 200 drugs, I.V. flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, the handling of sterile products, total parental nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement.

? In Medical Billing and Coding (Clearfield only), students will learn how to complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims and use forms to streamline billing procedures. The course covers CPT (introduction, guidelines, evaluation and management) and special fields, such as surgery, radiology and laboratory.

? In the EKG Technician (Clearfield only) program, students will learn how to perform electrocardiogram tests to monitor and record electrical impulses transmitted by the heart. EKG technicians assist physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiac and blood vessel irregularities. Students will practice with equipment and perform hands-on labs.
