HARRISBURG – The State Museum of Pennsylvania presents “Artists Conversations,” a three-part program in conjunction with “Art of the State: Pennsylvania 2012,” on exhibit through Sept. 9. The State Museum will also offer special guided tours of the exhibit on Fridays and Sundays. The programs are free with museum admission and reservations are not required.
“Artists Conversations” pairs a selection of “Art of the State” artists with museum staff members to share their perspectives on the 2012 exhibition. The first program in the series will feature five members of the Harrisburg Camera Club who each have works in the show: Geoff Crego, Jim Crowley, Andrew Hoff, Don Uvick and Bob Willis. Museum staff photographer Don Gileswill join the club members on Sunday, July 15, at 1 p.m. to provide an insightful insiders’ tour of the exhibition.
“This is the second year in a row that Harrisburg Camera Club members have had at least five pieces in ‘Art of the State,'” State Museum Director David W. Dunn said. “We are impressed with this record and their expertise, and look forward to hearing them share their insights with our visitors.”
“Artists Conversations” will also be held on Friday, Aug. 17, at 6:30 p.m. for Harrisburg’s 3rd in the Burg, pairing artist Carol Oldenburg, York, with Dunn, and on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. for Harrisburg’s Gallery Walk, teaming sculptor Mark Pettegrow, Bucks County, with State Museum Education and Outreach Chief Beth A. Hager.
In addition, guided tours of “Art of the State” will be offered every week throughout the exhibit’s run. The tours are approximately 25 minutes long and are offered on Fridays at 12:15 p.m. and 1 p.m., and on Sundays at 2 p.m. The Friday tours are a part of The State Museum’s special “Learn at Lunchtime” summer series in which admission is free every Friday through Aug. 31, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
“Art of the State” is recognized as the official, statewide juried competition for Pennsylvania artists. This year’s show features 129 pieces by 115 artists working throughout the state. “Art of the State” is co-presented by the Greater Harrisburg Arts Council and The State Museum.
The State Museum of Pennsylvania, adjacent to the State Capitol in Harrisburg, is one of 25 historic sites and museums administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History®. Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for children and senior citizens.
