The Last Word
Jay: “Picking the local HS teams to sweep again and all go to 2-0. Unfortunately can’t say the same for the local college team though. But a sweep for the PA teams on the road in the NFL makes for a pretty good weekend for ‘local’ football.”
Chris: “I’m taking the Steelers simply because Mike Tomlin usually has them revved up for the season opener. I cannot believe the NFL pitted the rivals against each other in the opener. This is a game that’s meant for December.”
Dustin: “Both Curwensville and Clearfield need to have solid weeks despite their victories last Friday. Curwensville nearly was upset by Smethport, and Clearfield had to overcome turnovers in the first half to win. Obviously you’d expect week one struggles and mistakes, but it’s how they improve the next week that matters. As for PSU-Bama, I’m just being realistic. Despite the White House, which from experience is THE experience at Beaver Stadium one has to experience in life just once, I think the Crimson Tide will be just too much for the tough PSU defense. On the pro front, I’m going 2-0 for the PA teams. No reason, just going with my gut on those ones.”
Rusty: “West Branch probably has the toughest challenge of the week for the local teams in these picks, and I hope they prove my choice wrong. I still can’t believe that two major Division I teams are going to use AT LEAST two quarterbacks each – maybe PSU and ‘Bama’ can swap QB’s in the second half and decide who to name as the #1 starter. Oh well, it gives those of us who don’t have to coach somethng to talk about – the “White House” makes the difference in that one. I really think that the Steelers are on a mission to get back to the Super Bowl and don’t believe the Ravens have a chance. The Eagles appeared a little unsettled in the preseason, but they are playing the Rams, who aren’t quite ready to be contenders in the early season.”
Dave: “First, my condolences to BEA’s players, coaches, and fans – losing (assistant) coach Gawen Stoker this week is a tough blow for all of you. Bald Eagle will want to win in his honor, but talent wins 9 times out of 10 and the Bisons are still the better team. We’ll find out this week if West Branch is for-real. PSU is outgunned and will be lucky to keep the deficit under 10 points, and I like the Steelers’ chances to get back in the Ravens’ heads, especially early in the season before their age starts to take its toll.”
