CLEARFIELD – Troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police K-9 unit visited Novey Recycling on Oct. 5 to certify three dogs. The dogs will be used for arson investigations across the state, and Novey Recycling agreed to let them use a number of automobiles for certification purposes.
Certain vehicles had accelerants placed in them, and certain vehicles did not. The dogs had to not only alert to the vehicles that did, but pin point the area of the vehicle where the accelerant was present. The dogs could not alert to a vehicle where there was not an accelerant present.
When asked why Novey Recycling would be involved with this program,Operations Manager Mike Boal said “Over the years we at Novey Recycling have always had community involvement. Our police officers put their lives on the line every day for us citizens, and usually the only time we think of them is when we have a problem we need their help with. The small amount of time it took us to prepare a training area, and move some cars for the state police to certify these dogs was nothing compared to the service these dogs can provide to the community. We have worked with police, and fire departments with other training programs, and look forward to staying involved with these types of programs in the future. “Â
