HARRISBURG – State Rep. Camille “Bud” George, D-74 of Houtzdale, said small businesses in the Commonwealth should consider applying for grants of up to $7,500 to acquire equipment or to install systems that prevent pollution or improve energy efficiency.
“Small Business Advantage Grants require matching funds from qualifying businesses and the projects must save the firms at least 10 percent annually in energy or pollution-related expenses,” George said. “An eligible business can have up to 100 full-time employees, and applicants may be manufacturers, retailers, service providers, mining operators or agricultural businesses.”
The application deadline is Nov. 5. Eligible applications will be considered by the state Department of Environmental Protection on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted. Eligible projects include HVAC and boiler upgrades, high-efficiency lighting, waste recycling systems and auxiliary power units deployed as anti-idling technology for trucks.

“The grant program is an opportunity for businesses to mute the significant rate increases we face when the electricity rate caps end in our area on Dec. 31,” George said. “However, the grant program has a record of quickly running out of funding.”
In other news, George announced state grants for two local entities:
? Clearfield Borough was awarded a $12,243 Recycling Performance Grant from the DEP for recycling 1,295 tons in 2008.
? The Clearfield Arts Studio Theatre Inc. is approved for a $1,665 PA Partners in the Arts grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
