CLARION – Senior strong safety Nick Sipes of Curwensville topped the Clarion (0-5) defense for the fifth consecutive game as one of two Golden Eagles with nine tackles in Saturday’s Homecoming Game, but Slippery Rock disappointed the partisan Memorial Stadium crowd of 6,500 by pulling out a 16-13 win on a field goal with 1:41 remaining.
Sipes made four solo stops, one behind the line of scrimmage, and five assists and also forced a fumble in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division clash.
His 11.0 average for 55 total tackles ranks second in the PSAC and is tied for ninth in NCAA Division III.
He also is second in the conference with 31 assists and tied for ninth in tackles for losses with a 1.30 average.

OBERLIN, Ohio – For the second game in a row, David Kalgren of Curwensville was Oberlin’s leading tackler with eight solo stops as the underdog Yeomen (2-2) gave No. 6-ranked Wittenberg (Ohio) a battle in front of a Homecoming crowd of 1,892 Saturday afternoon, but the unbeaten visitors escaped Savage Stadium with a 27-21 North Coast Athletic Conference win.
The sophomore right cornerback also broke up two passes, returned one punt for eight yards and averaged 23 yards on four kickoff returns.
Kalgren leads the Yeomen in solo stops with 24 and total tackles with 26.
He has two interceptions and a team-high three passes defended.
Kalgren also has emerged as the Yeoman’s top returner, running back five kickoffs for 92 yards and four punts for 32 yards.

CALIFORNIA – A 61-yard catch-and-run by redshirt freshman Jesse Hoover of Curwensville was the offensive highlight for Lock Haven (0-5) against undefeated and No. 4-ranked California Saturday.
The Bald Eagles were held to 84 net yards in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game that attracted 3,862 fans to Adamson Stadium.
Hoover’s reception was the longest play of the season for Lock Haven, which has lost 26 games in a row.
He has 10 receptions for 195 yards, a team-best 19.5 average.

PITTSBURGH – Redshirt junior quarterback Andrew Janocko of Clearfield was the holder for three field goals and five extra points kicked by Dan Hutchins in Pitt’s 44-17 non-conference victory over Florida International Saturday.
A crowd of 45,207 at Heinz Field saw Hutchins give the Panthers (2-2) a 13-3 halftime lead with field goals from 30 and 38 yards away. He added another 38-yarder for the only points of the third quarter before Pitt exploded for four touchdowns in the fourth period.

PITTSBURGH – Redshirt freshman Nick Redden of Clearfield saw action at fullback for Duquesne (2-3) in a 44-17 Northeast Conference loss to visiting Monmouth (N.J.) Saturday.
The Dukes fell to 1-1 in the conference with 1,831 looking on at Rooney Field.

WILLIAMSPORT – Sophomore wide receiver Jarrin Campman of Clearfield appeared in his fourth game for Lycoming (3-1) at David Pearson Saturday as the Warriors toppled visiting King’s 31-24 in their Middle Atlantic Conference opener in front of 1,164 fans.

MEN’S SOCCER
WASHINGTON – Senior midfielder John Lhota of Clearfield scored a key goal for Washington & Jefferson (5-2-2) in a 2-2 double-overtime non-conference tie with visiting Wilmington (Ohio) on Sept. 28.
He chipped a touch pass from David Stueber into the top right corner to get the Presidents even at 1-1, his first goal of the season beating the halftime buzzer by just two seconds.
Saturday afternoon, W & J opened Presidents’ Athletic Conference play with a 2-1 victory over Grove City in Alexandre Stadium.
Lhota has started every game with 15 shots, eight on goal. He also has one assist.

NEW WILMINGTON – Senior midfielder Alan Baldwin of Olanta has played in all but one of Westminster’s games, including a 5-0 win over visiting Waynesburg Saturday in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
The Clearfield Area High School graduate also saw action in a reserve role earlier in the week when Fredonia (N.Y.) State handed the Titans (2-6-2) their fourth consecutive shutout loss, 1-0, in overtime at Harold Burry Stadium.

ALTOONA – Freshman midfielder Kurtis Graham of Clearfield got his third start of the season for Penn State-Altoona (6-6) Saturday at Spring Run Stadium as the Lions defeated Pitt-Bradford 3-0 at with first place in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference on the line.
Graham had two shots, one on goal, to up his total to nine shots, five on goal, in nine games. He has logged two assists.
The Lions, who edged Pitt-Greensburg 1-0 on Sept. 28, lead the AMCC with three wins for nine points.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
NEW WILMINGTON – Senior forward Danielle Struble of Curwensville netted what proved to be the decisive goal as Westminster (5-4-1) launched its Presidents’ Athletic Conference schedule by trimming Waynesburg 2-1 in Harold Burry Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Struble scored in the 59th minute, Sarah Nee getting an assist, to give the Lady Titans a 2-0 advantage.
Struble attempted five shots to increased her team-high season total to 49.
She is second to Nee with in goals with five and points with 12.

CLARION – Senior Juliana Howell of Clearfield started at forward for the third time this season Saturday as Slippery Rock (6-3-1) settled for a 2-2 double-overtime tie with Clarion after leading 2-0 with five minutes left in regulation at Memorial Stadium.
Howell had one of The Rock’s 14 shots in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game.
The tie cost Slippery Rock sole possession of third place. The Rock is one of four teams with 13 points.
Howell has three assists in eight games. Three of her six shots have been on goal.

LOCK HAVEN – Senior midfielder Jenny Williams of Clearfield saw action in a reserve role for Lock Haven (3-6-1) in a double-overtime 2-2 tie with Clarion at Hubert Jack Stadium Sept. 29 and a 4-3 loss at Edinboro Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Eagles slipped to 1-6-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Williams has started six games and owns two goals.

LORETTO – Freshman forward/midfielder Brooke Mohney made her fourth appearance for St. Francis (8-3-1) Sunday and was credited with her first shot on goal in a 6-1 victory over Mount St. Marys at the Stokes Soccer Complex.
The Red Flash is off to a 2-1 start in the Northeast Conference.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
DUBOIS – Sophomore opposite Sophia Reed of Clearfield joined freshman middle hitter/opposite Lindsay Barrett of Curwensville and freshman outside hitter Stephanie Barrett of Curwensville in the starting lineup as Penn State-DuBois celebrated its No. 20 ranking in the latest United States Collegiate Athletic Association Coaches Poll by winning three of four matches on the road last weekend.
The Lady Lions, who moved into the Top 20 after sweeping Penn State-New Kensington 25-13, 15-7, 25-10 on Sept. 28, handled Penn State-York and Penn State-Schuylkill 3-0 and Penn State-Brandywine 3-2 while losing only to No. 12 Mont Alto, the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference leader, by 3-1.
On Saturday, Penn State-DuBois defeated Penn State-York 25-17, 33-31, 25-21 before falling to host Penn State-Mont Alto 26-24, 5-25, 16-25, 9-25.
The Lady Lions bounced back Sunday with a comeback win over Penn State-Brandywine 8-25, 23-25, 24-20, 25-19, 15-13 and a sweep over host Penn State-Schuylkill 25-15, 25-17, 25-12.
