CLEARFIELD – A 24-year-old Clearfield man who falsely identified himself to Clearfield Borough Police before trying to escape their custody waived his right to a preliminary hearing at Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.

Darnell James McCoy, 24 of Clearfield, has been charged with false identification to law enforcement, resisting arrest, intentional possession of a controlled substance by a person not registered and use/possession of drug paraphernalia. His bail was set at $50,000 unsecured.

In addition, Magisterial District Judge James Hawkins said that McCoy has since been charged with escape on March 19. His bail was set at $10,000 unsecured for the same.

According to a prior GantDaily report, police were conducting a “Smooth Operator/Aggressive Driving” detail along Bigler Avenue at 7:30 p.m. March 16. They indicated they stopped a vehicle near East 14th Street for speeding.

Police said McCoy, who was a passenger in the vehicle, reportedly provided false identification. They said McCoy then fled on foot while they were attempting to gain his positive identification.

Police said McCoy was apprehended following a short foot pursuit. They indicated McCoy was wanted on a warrant by the Pennsylvania State Parole. They said McCoy was reportedly found in possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

In the affidavit of probable cause, police said they were processing McCoy’s charges at which time he escaped from the station. They indicated McCoy was handcuffed to the bar on the wall in the interview room.

Police said McCoy slipped from the handcuffs and fled out an open garage door at the station. They said he took off on foot and found only the handcuffs, when they checked the interview room.

Police said they ran along East Cheery Street to the alley, where it connects with East Walnut Street. They noticed McCoy’s shadow, stating he was running west toward South Second Street.

Police said they ran down the alley and checked the hedges along South Second Street. They said they found McCoy lying under the hedges. They said McCoy was ordered out of the same and placed back into custody.
