PUNXSUTAWNEY – Over the Memorial Day weekend Pennsylvania State Police will be agressively patrolling the area to reduce the number of crashes. Police will be targeting speeders and carrying out the “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

According to a news release by the state police out of Punxsutawney, speeding is leading cause of crashes in Pennsylvania. For this reason the
police will be targeting those speeding over the course of the weekend. The fine for traveling 70 miles-per-hour in a 55-miles-per-hour zone is $139.50.

The “Click It or Ticket” campaign focuses on enforcing seatbelt laws within the state. Police will be waging this campaign until May 31. During this time period there will be zero tolerance for violations involving seat belts. According to the release, currently 85.6 percent of Pennsylvania drivers use seat belts, and it is the goal of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to reach 90 percent of drivers by 2010.

Children should be in rear facing child safety seats till they are one year old and weight twenty pounds. Newborns sould be reclined at 45 degrees to avoid breathing complications if their heads fall forward. All children still, according to law, need to ride in a safety seat of some kind until they are eight years old.

In the Troop C area there will also be roving D.U.I. patrols and sobriety check points.
