CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Chiefs opened the 2009 Jefferson County League against a red hot Laurel Eye Clinic squad from Brookville in American Legion play with a 14-2 defeat.

The Chiefs were coming off a 2008 season where they finished with a 17-14 record under head coach Sid Lansberry.

Lansberry is once again at the helm and after the opening day loss mentioned, “After a five game high school week we just didn’t have a lot of pitching left.”

Brookville took an early 3-0 lead after four innings Sunday but it was the fifth when they put the game away with seven runs. The game was called after six innings due to the twelve run mercy rule.

The visitors from Jefferson County banged a total of thirteen hits off three different pitchers with starter Aaron Sayers taking the loss after going the first four innings. Trevor Flanagan and Corey Bookhamer each threw one inning in relief for the Chiefs.

Pitcher Chase Lyle went the distance for Laurel Eye Clinic to pick up the win as he scattered five Clearfield hits. The only damage the Chiefs could do to Lyle was a fifth inning, one-out two-run double by Sayers.

Brookville was paced by Ethan Harmon with three hits while Cayliff Worling, Nick Bishop, Dakota Singleton, and Mike Lindermuth each had two singles. Ryan Zimmerman had a double for Brookville.

Lansberry summed up the days play, “It’s only our first game and we are still involved in high school playoffs. Perhaps we weren’t as focused as we should have been going in.”

The Chiefs play two games this coming Saturday, both at home, 1:00 pm against Fox Township and then Bradford to follow.
