CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Council is considering what to do about potential traffic from a proposed mining project in Lawrence Township.
Borough Operations Manager Leslie Stott reported to council that the proposed project is along Martin Street Extension. The coal trucks would then come down that road, down Turnpike Avenue, over Market Street and then down Front Street to the tipple past the Hyde light.
Stott pointed to potential safety and economic hazards the traffic could present to the borough.
Council President Jim Leitzinger agreed.
“The main thing here is the safety issue … the road issue … and the children there.”
“These are streets that just got paved,” added Stott. “They were never poured with the standards of having two-to-three years of coal traffic.”
Steve Biancuzzo, head of the borough’s street department, noted that when his crew has to travel in their work trucks along some of these roads, such as Martin Street, other vehicles often have to pull over to let them get past.
Stott said that she gave the Department of Environmental Protection the information that she presented to council and she will explore alternate routes the traffic may be able to take, as well as putting into writing council’s concerns.
“I think it would be in our best interest expressing these concerns,” said Stott.
