CLEARFIELD – Lois Richards, executive director of the Clearfield County Career and Technology Center, commended the work of the automotive mechanic students at the CCCTC as their chopper earned three first place awards at the Donnie Smith Chopper Challenge in St. Paul, Minn. at the end of March.
Richards noted that the students won their division as well as two other awards.
Richards said they won the Design and Innovation Award, while the motorcycle featured a car tire at the rear.
“Some master builders suggested that the students get a patent (for their design),” she said.
She said the student’s work also received the Recycle, Reuse and Rebuild Award. She said they used parts from last year’s finished motorcycle for this year’s project, resulting in a lesser production cost.
Larry Allen, West Branch School District representative, said the students should not only be congratulated, but instructor Dan Kerlin as well.
“Every time he takes the kids out there, they come back with awards. He has done a heck of a job, and it’s amazing. We’ve never received this many awards until he came here,” he said.
