DASD Asked to Consider KOZ Proposal

DUBOIS – Keystone Opportunity Zone renewal season is still in force as Craig Coon, director of community and economic development in Jefferson County, approached the DuBois Area School Board for their approval.

Coon presented to the school board 73 acres of undeveloped land for renewal of its KOZ status. The land in question is in Falls Creek, in the area of DuBois Regional Airport. Coon has already talked to Falls Creek and Reynoldsville officials as part of the renewal application.

If all parties agree to renew, the KOZ status land will have tax free benefits until 2015.

“I think this will spur any activity it will get,” said Coon in response to a question.

School board member Beverly Kurts expressed concern over the possibility the land owners could simply get the tax benefit from the land, $3,300 total, without putting effort into developing the land. Coon explained to receive the tax benefit buildings need to be constructed.
