Campus Corner: Jury Continues Solid Hitting for Slippery Rock

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Sophomore Adam Jury of Bigler (Clearfield Area High School) had another good week for Slippery Rock, hitting .357 in eight games against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division teams as The Rock closed out the annual southern trip with five wins at the Bob Gladwin Baseball Complex.
 
Jury started four games at shortstop, one at third base and three as designated hitter and collected 10 hits in 28 at-bats.
 
He had three multi-hit games, raising his total to six for the season, and drove in six runs. He drew one walk and was hit by a pitch once.
 
The Rock, pegged to win the PSAC Western Division by the head coaches, split with East Stroudsburg, winning 5-2 after losing 10-7, swept West Chester 4-2 and 6-5, lost a twinbill to Shippensburg 10-2 and 5-0 and then beat Mansfield 21-9 Friday and 8-2 Saturday for an overall record of 10-4.
 
Jury\’s .468 batting average is second on the team, tied for second in hits with 22 and third in runs with 16.
 
He has three doubles, one home run and 14 runs batted in. He has walked six times.
 
In the field, he has one error in 17 chances.
 
Pacing The Rock with a blistering .509 average is junior catcher Matt Adams of Philipsburg.
 
He also leads in hits (27), doubles (8), home runs (5) and RBIs (26).

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Penn State-Behrend sophomore Kyle Kline of Clearfield was hitless in two plate appearances as the designated hitter in an 11-4 win over Kenyon (Ohio) at the Lawnwood Complex Sunday.
 
The Lions, who are defending champions in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, also won the first game 5-2 in their season opener.

SOFTBALL
 
SALEM, Va. – Freshman Alanna Luzier of Frenchville opened the season as the Penn State-Altoona starting second baseman and leadoff batter, and the Clearfield Area High School grad drove in the Lions\’ only run in a double-header loss to once-beaten Roanoke (Va.) College Sunday.
 
She averted a first-game shutout with a two-out single in the seventh inning.
 
Roanoke (9-1) won 6-1 and 13-0 for a seven-game winning streak.
 
The Lions, who had only one hit in the five-inning nightcap, fell to 1-3.
 
They opened Saturday with a split against Sweet Briar (Va.) College, winning 7-3 after the hosts rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the first game.

KANOEOHE, Hawaii – Sophomore Brittany Pataky of Clearfield saw action in three games as Lock Haven ended its week\’s stay in the Aloha State with five wins in a row before losing its finale 3-2 to Hawaii-Pacific Friday.
 
The Lady Eagles (6-4) had swept Chaminade 3-1 and 8-6 and BYU-Hawaii 1-0 and 8-0 in six innings and beat Hawaii-Pacific (15-3) in the first game of their twinbill.
 
Pataky was the designated hitter in the second games against the last two teams and pinch-hit hit in another game.
 
She was hitless in five official at-bats but scored a run in the after walking and stealing second base in the nightcap against BYU-Hawaii (7-13) at Laie last Wednesday.
 
For the season, Pataky is 2-for-11 with two runs scored.
