CURWENSVILLE – With their best offensive output of the year the Curwensville boys basketball team slammed visiting Sheffield Saturday afternoon at Patton Hall, 76-44. The victory enabled the Tide to win back-to-back games for the first time as they upped their record to 5-7 under head coach Matt Wassil.
Curwensville was tough on both sides of the ball in the first sixteen minutes as they took a monster lead into the locker room at the half, 43-15.
A relentless defense, coupled with a hot shooting offense in the first period gave the Tide a huge 24-5 bulge after one. Wassil was quick to credit the entire team, “The kids really shared the ball this afternoon. A lot of assists were made due to the unselfishness of everyone. As a coach, that is a part of the game that is very refreshing to observe.”
The Tide basically coasted in the second half as Wassil was able to clear his bench and give all who dressed lots of playing time. Curwensville was still able to outscore Sheffield in final sixteen minutes, 33-29, to win going away. Wassil summed it up by saying, “We played very well, all around. It was a big win for us and winning two straight really helps our confidence. Hopefully we can keep it going because we play Glendale here (Curwensville) Monday night in a big Moshannon Valley League (MVL) game.”
Senior David Kalgren took the lead in scoring with 18 while Sam Gardner, a junior, dropped in 17 for the Golden Tide.
Sheffield, now 3-9, was fueled by Lyle Shine with nine and Kenny Littlefield who had seven.
The junior varsity contest also went to the Golden Tide, 50-43.
As mentioned earlier the Golden Tide will host the Glendale Vikings, 7-4, on Monday night in a big MVL contest. In league action the Vikings are 2-2 while the Tide are 2-3. JV action starts at 6 pm at Patton Hall with the varsity starting 15 minutes after that (JV) game.
The game can be heard on WOKW, 102.9, starting at 7:15 pm.
