MEADVILLE – Ten Bison wrestlers survived Friday night’s opening rounds, as the team remains in the hunt for the tournament crown at Meadville’s Tool City Invitational.
Clearfield has advanced seven to Saturday morning’s semi-final round.
Both Bison Andre Buck (215) and Sean Owen (285) scored on a pair of falls to do so.
Buck pinned Josh Smith (Corry) in 4:48 and Kevin Thompson (Meadville) at the 5:56 mark of his quarter-final bout.
At heavyweight, Owen stuck Anthony Szymczak (Erie Cathedral Prep) to his back in 2:47 but needed only 1:54 to deck Cody Reesman (Howland).
Owen is now 14-0 on the season, including 12 wins by fall. He will meet Matt Knepp (Meadville) in his semi-final bout.
Clearfield’s Shane Peters (103, 13-8), Kodie Lowder (112, 3-2), Andrew Spicer (119, 6-2), Holden Lowe (130, 10-2) and Derek Danver (145, 4-3) all picked up wins in the quarters to remain in the championship bracket.
Bison Wil Beauseigneur (152), Shawn Hall (171) and Cliff Hill (189) bounced back in the consolations to stay in the tournament.
“We have seven in the semis, and the kids wrestled well. We had some kids who didn’t win that should have. But overall, I think that we wrestled well tonight,” head coach Jeff Aveni said.
He said the team had been tied for first but was now around second place in the team standings.
“We’re right in the hunt. We’re right where we want to be heading into tomorrow,” he said.
Saturday’s wrestling will resume at 9 a.m. with the consolation finals and fifth and sixth place medal bouts set for 5 p.m. The championship finals are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
