AMESVILLE – Another slow start doomed the Curwensville Area High School girls basketball team Friday night.
The Lady Tide got only one free throw from Tess Bloom in the first quarter, while host Moshannon Valley was pouring in 20 points en route to a 46-25 Moshannon Valley League victory.
\”We just can\’t get behind that much,\” Curwensville coach Vic Gearhart said. \”We just don\’t have the firepower.
\”We played them reasonably even the rest of the game, but we\’re just at a low confidence level right now.\”
The Lady Tide scored more points, 13, in the third period than it did the rest of the game, with Hannah Walls netting seven and Bloom the other six.
Those two combined for all but three of Curwensville\’s points. Walls, who sat out most of the second period with four fouls, wound up with 12 and Bloom added 10.
Vanessa Rowley led Mo Valley with 20 points, including 11 in the first period. Shannon Greslick chipped in with 11 for the Damsels, who are off to a 3-1 start in the MVL after sharing the title with Harmony last season.
Mo Valley, which boasts four returning starters, is 4-4 overall.
\”They were more aggressive, and I thought the key to game was they beat us on rebounding,\” Gearhart said. \”Offensive rebounds led to a lot of their scoring, either putbacks or fouls.\”
Jenessa Stiles fouled out while Halls and Alesia Bressler, who had the Lady Tide\’s other three points, finished with four fouls apiece.
Curwensville, 0-6 with three MVL losses, will play at home against Bucktail in a non-league scrap Monday before making long treks to Kane Tuesday and Sheffield Friday for Allegheny Mountain League games.
Despite Courtney Bachelier\’s game-high 12 points, the Curwensville junior varsity was dealt a 27-23 setback. Katelyn Thompson paced Mo Valley with eight points.
