DUBOIS – One road in Sandy Township may soon be renamed after a former resident who died in Iraq. On Monday the Sandy Township Supervisors voted unanimously to approve changing the name of Chaplin Road to Sgt. Read Lane.
The road will be named after Sgt. Brandon Read, a former resident along Chaplin Road who died in Iraq.
The name change came at the request of residents along the road. The supervisors were presented with a petition signed by all but one family along the road in favor of the name change.
Supervisor Chairman Brady LaBorde said the topic came up last year when the supervisors were asked to change the name of the road by members of Read’s family who live along the road.
The supervisors initially denied the request due to the information they had the Read was a Tennessee resident. He said they later learned that Read lived along Chaplin Road for a time. He said that Read’s father was a member of the military and that led to them moving a lot.
“I think we should reconsider it and rename it Sgt. Read Lane,” said LaBorde.
The other supervisors agreed. The name change is contingent upon approval by the US Postal Service and Clearfield County 911.
