COUDERSPORT, Pa. – Nine of Curwensville\’s 12 regular wrestlers logged winning records as the Golden Tide defeated four District 9 opponents before losing 48-12 to District 6 Class AA power Forest Hills to claim the second-place trophy at the Coudersport Duals Saturday.

Coach Duane Wriglesworth II\’s Golden Tide defeated Johnsonburg 37-24, Coudersport 54-16, Bradford 42-34 and Cameron County 54-16.

Curwensville, which did not wrestle Oswayo Valley and Sheffield, went into its Coudy Duals debut without any 103-pounder or 130-pounder and then lost middleweight Duane Wriglesworth III because of a shoulder injury in the third match.

\”The coaching staff was very happy with the results,\” coach Wriglesworth said. \”We\’re pretty thin in some areas right now, so we were very concerned going in.

\”We were happy to see our athletes gain confidence in all areas.

\”Our only loss was to a top-notch double-A team. Forest Hills is very impressive and solid at every weight. They\’re like an old-fashioned team, singles and doubles, wings and bars.\”

Jeff Thomas was Curwensville\’s standout with three falls, a major decision and a regular decision at 145 and 152.

Derek Brothers (119) also was 5-0, including a 25-second pin. Two of his wins came via forfeits.

A trio of Golden Tide matmen matched 4-1 records in the marathon event.

Heavyweight Walter Koontz enjoyed a career day with three pins and a shutout. The senior, who had only five wins last season and was 0-4 in December, was the hero against Bradford.

With the Golden Tide clinging to a 36-34 lead, Koontz went out and pinned James Kan in 1:58.

He also had a crucial first-period fall early in the Johnsonburg match.

\”We weren\’t expecting the performance we got out of him,\” Wriglesworth said. \”He had a real good day and was the difference in those two matches.\”

Nathan Russell (215) was the third Curwensville wrestler with a three-pin effort. His other win was a forfeit.

Jake Keller (112) was awarded three forfeits and split the two bouts he had, the loss a 6-5 squeaker to Johnsonburg\’s Jesse Wolf.

Two moves cost Brett Sutika (135 and 140) a banner day. He was 2-2 in four close bouts, edged 2-1 by Johnsonburg\’s Zac Wolfe on a takedown at the buzzer and 2-0 by Forest Hills\’ Richard Brydon.

Sutika received one forfeit for a 3-2 log that was equaled by Tyler Peters (125), Wes McGarry (135 and 140) and Zack Dimmick (171), each of whom had one fall.

This week, the 4-3 Golden Tide will have three matches in four days, a home make-up with Moshannon Valley Wednesday sandwiched between road meets against Redbank Valley at New Bethlehem Tuesday and West Branch at Allport Friday.
