CLEARFIELD- Holidays are among the busiest long-distance travel periods of the year. Only 5 to 6 percent of holiday trips are by air, while 2 to 3 percent are by bus, train, ship, or other mode of transportation. That means nearly 91 percent of all travel is by personal vehicle.
In an effort to improve highway safety, PennDOT will continue Operation Safe Holiday.
This combined effort between PennDOT’s Highway Safety Program, Buckle Up Pennsylvania, Smooth Operator and police departments across the state is aimed at reducing crashes, injuries and deaths. Enforcement initiatives will focus on impaired driving, aggressive driving and unbelted occupants.
There were 40,000 DUI arrests made across the Commonwealth last year. DUI checkpoints and roving patrols will increase as part of Operation Safe Holiday, which runs through January 31, 2009.
Police will be looking for impaired drivers across the nine counties of PennDOT’s District 2. Those counties include Clearfield, Centre, Cameron, Clinton, Elk, McKean, Mifflin, Juniata, and Potter. Last year in District 2, there were 7 alcohol related crashes reported over the holiday season. PennDOT wants everyone to have a safe and sober holiday season.
