PHILIPSBURG – The Philipsburg-Osceola Area School District is seeking volunteers to participate in a tutoring program entitled Reading Works. Volunteering for this 12-week program is one of the greatest gifts anyone can give to a child. With lots of practice almost all children can be taught to read successfully. Our goal is for our students to be independent readers and writers.
Reading Works is a one-to-one tutoring program for children who need extra support to learn to read. The program will begin in January and conclude in April. Tutors and students meet for 30 minutes a day, two days a week. Tutors will receive highly structured training. All materials for tutoring are provided.
Tutoring sessions are held at Osceola Mills Elementary, North Lincoln Hill Elementary and Philipsburg Elementary. The volunteers’ preferences regarding site and time are matched with teachers’ schedules. Volunteers in past years’ have included Title I parents, grandparents, retired teachers, R.S.V.P volunteers, and other community members.
If you would like to become involved in this program, call 342-4440 to register. Deadline for registration is Dec. 19.
