CLEARFIELD-It started out with high hopes for a successful season as the Clearfield girls basketball squad went 3-1 after four games. Then injuries and illness set in almost the rest of the campaign and the Lady Bisons could just never get it going again like at the beginning.
Bradford ended Clearfield’s season Monday night with a convincing 54-36 win on the Bisons home hardwood. The Lady Owls won every quarter to sweep the two game season series. The northern visitors won the first time this year 44-33.
The Owls are now 9-13 as they head into the playoffs as the number two seed in District 9 AAA action this Friday against Punxsutawney. The win against the Lady Bisons ensured the Lady Owls of the two seed and a home playoff game. The winner will take on St. Mary’s for the District title. Clearfield packs up it’s equipment and ends the year at 5-19.
Clearfield kept Bradford close through the first half as they only trailed 11-9 after one and 22-16 at the break. It was the period after the break, the third one to be exact, that sealed the fate for the Lady Bisons as the Owls used a 15-4 edge to go out in front comfortably, 37-20, after three. Tricia Copeland had eight of her game high 18 to pace Bradford in the third period. The Bradford senior hit for three treys on the night and was followed in scoring by another Owl senior, Katie White with 12. Clearfield was led by Annie Janocko and Elizabeth Peters with 7 apiece. In all both squads had nine players each who added points to the scoreboard.
It was the final game for the lone Bison senior, Alanna Luzier, who did hit a fourth quarter three pointer in her last appearance as a Lady Bison cager. Clearfield will have four starters back next season with several experienced girls coming off of the bench for coach Joey Castagnolo and his staff.
Clearfield’s junior varsity squad ended the season on a winning note as they won the first game
42-39. The Lady Bisons JV team finished the year at 11-13.
