Meat Loaf Closing Out Fair Despite Claims Otherwise
CLEARFIELD – Meat Loaf will close out this year’s Clearfield County Fair in spite of a claim that he was scheduled to perform on the same night at a Canadian festival.

District Attorney Warns of Dangerous Drug, Two Men Arrested
DUBOIS – Clearfield County District Attorney William A. Shaw, Jr. and the Pennsylvania State Police announce today that an investigation into the sale and distribution of controlled substances in the DuBois area has increased concerns for death caused by overdose.
Shaw stated that law enforcement officials are currently investigating the sale of heroin believed to be extremely dangerous. Shaw reported that the current supply of heroin in the DuBois area is unsafe and potentially lethal if ingested. Shaw stated the heroin can be identified by the red label “New Era” and encourages anyone who may be in possession of this substance to destroy it immediately. Shaw advises anyone who may have consumed the drug to seek immediate medical attention.

Slavinsky Officially Placed on Paid Leave
AMESVILLE – Dr. Mike Slavinski, superintendent of the Moshannon Valley School District was officially placed on paid administrative leave Monday night.
Slavinski will be on leave pending an investigation, according to Aimee Willett, solicitor for the Moshannon Valley School Board. The leave is retroactively effective, beginning April 17.

Valerie Stiner Named Wal-Mart Supercenter Teacher of the Year
PHILIPSBURG – Valerie Stine, a teacher in the Philipsburg-Osceola Mills School District was named local Teacher of the Year by Clearfield Wal-Mart Supercenter.
The award, which was given as part of Wal-Mart’s Twelfth annual Teacher of the year program, comes in honor of National Teacher’s Day on May 8. Stiner received a grant for her school, a $100 gift card to buy classroom supplies, a Teacher of the Year polo shirt and a personalized certificate.

Man Found Dead in Clearfield Apartment
CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Police are investigating the death of a 26-year-old man.
Police said officers found the unnamed man in his Krebs Avenue apartment Monday at 3:23 p.m.

Pair of Clearfield County Men Honored with Historic Markers
CLEARFIELD – The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission approved 35 historical marker applications across the state in 17 counties with Clearfield County receiving two of them.

Public Hearing Regarding Sunnyside Air Quality Permit Held
CURWENSVILLE – With one more permit to go, Sunnyside Ethanol LLC and the Department of Environmental Protection held a meeting with the public Wednesday night at Curwensville Middle School auditorium.
The meeting actually consisted of three components. The first was an overview by Sunnyside Ethanol of their air quality control plan. Sunnyside is working toward their air quality permit, the last permit they need before they can begin construction on their proposed ethanol plant in Curwensville at the former Howe’s Leather Company.

Philipsburg Hospital to Reopen Soon
PHILIPSBURG – If all goes as planned, the former Philipsburg Hospital’s doors could see patients walking through them by summer.
According to GantDaily news partner Channel 6 News, an agreement for the final sale of the facility has been reached.
Dr. Larry Adams said the plan is to open the emergency room first with other offerings coming in time.

Sunflower Plan Growing Roots
CLEARFIELD – Sunflowers! Lots of them, everywhere. That is the theme of the sunflower campaign as expressed by Samuel Ettaro at the meeting held Tuesday at the Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Library in Clearfield.
Ettaro would like to make Clearfield County the Sunflower Capital of Pennsylvania promoting tourism with the planting, growing and harvesting of the many varieties of sunflowers. The meeting was a brainstorming session to determine what areas to target for the first planting, ways to include the public in general as well as the downtown merchants, and how to reap the most benefit to the community.

Commercial Carrier Taking Off at DUJ; New One Expected to Land Soon
DUBOIS – News that Mesa Air Group, a franchisee of US Airways, will soon leave the DuBois Regional Airport will not cause much turbulence for travelers.
That comes from Bob Shaffer, airport manager, who said he expects “a seamless transition that the travelling public would never even notice.”
