EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — Freshman John Lytle set a University of Notre Dame record for the 200-yard freestyle to help the Irish 800 relay quartet lower the school standard in the first day of the 2007 Big East Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday in the Nassau County Aquatic Center.
Lytle\’s leadoff leg 1:38.35 broke the ND record of 1:38.36 set by Ray Fitzpatrick in 2000.
Ted Brown, Andrew Hoffman and Jeff Wood followed Lytle into the pool, and their NCAA consideration time of 6:32.67, good for second place behind West Virginia\’s 6:32.21, eclipsed the school mark of 6:35.47 established at last year\’s conference meet.
Yesterday, Lytle placed 12th in the 50 free individual event in 20.75 and turned in a 20.70 leadoff leg for the 200 free relay team that finished second in a season-best 1:21.35. Hoffman, Tim Kegelman and Louis Cavadini were the other swimmers in that relay, won in 1:18.89 by West Virginia.
Notre Dame, seeking its third consecutive Big East title, trails West Virginia 273-264 at the midway point of the 12-team meet.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Brandon Good of Clearfield capped his sophomore season with the Lycoming College men\’s swimming team by placing in two individual events and helping three Warrior \’A\’ relay foursomes place sixth in the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships at the Catholic Youth Center last weekend.
Good placed 13th in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.84 seconds after posting a 56.85 for 14th place in the prelims. He was 16th in the 50 freestyle in 23.48 after hitting 23.09 in the prelims.
Good anchored the 200 medley relay team, led off for the 200 free relay quartet and also was on the 400 free relay foursome. All of the swimmers on the relay teams are sophomores or freshmen.
Lycoming, which finished 5-5 in dual meets, wound up sixth among the 10 teams in the conference meet with 294.5 points, trailing Widener (761), Albright (501), Susquehanna (439), Scranton (320) and Elizabethtown (324).

HUNTINGDON, Pa. — Clearfield native and DuBois Central Catholic High School graduate Ruth Williamson scored 11 points as Susquehanna University kept their Commonwealth Women\’s Basketball Conference playoff hopes alive with a 62-57 road win against Juniata College in a makeup game Thursday evening.
The junior guard from Gettysburg hit four field goals, one a three-pointer, and both of her free throws to climb into 22nd place on the Crusaders\’ all-time scoring list with 594 points. She also had six rebounds, match Courtney Thibeault for team honors, and added one assist and one steal.
Despite starting only three games, Williamson is second on the team in points (170) and average (7.1). She leads the Crusaders in foul shooting percentage, 87.5, on 35 free throws in 40 attempts.
Susquehanna, 14-10 overall, moved into a three-way tie with Juniata and Elizabethtown for the fourth and final playoff spot at 5-8. Elizabethtown fell 76-53 to front-running Messiah (12-1) Thursday night. The regular season ends Saturday afternoon with Susquehanna hosting Lebanon Valley (4-9), Juniata visiting second place Albright (10-3) and Elizabethtown hosting third place Moravian (8-5).
