CLEARFIELD – If a group of anglers has its way, Clearfield could soon see a fish ladder on Raftsman’s Dam.
Stacy Bressler, special events coordinator for the Curwensville Anglers Restocking Program, addressed Clearfield Borough Council to ask if he could pursue the possibility of creating a way for fish to make it up-river.
Bressler said he wants to look at securing grant monies from perhaps the Fish and Boat Commission and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
As an added bonus, Bressler said the fish ladder construction would reinforce the dam at the same time as it would allow fish an easy and safe way to make it to spawning waters.
“In the summer … you’ll see thousands of fish trying to make the journey,” he said.
The step is the latest in an effort to help improve the fish habitat and recreation opportunities not only on the Susquehanna River, but also in Clearfield Borough. In late December, it was announced that the borough’s Lower Witmer Park will be the site of a boat launch sometime this year.
Although Bressler did not have to ask council’s permission to look for funding, he said he wanted to present the issue as a courtesy to keep them apprised of efforts to help area recreation.
